Professional and Academic Development

The module applies a practice-focused teaching and learning approach. Through critical reflection, it enables students to link their learning experiences from all other elements of the Bristol MBA program to form one holistic and continuous learning journey.

Leadership, Complexity and Change

This module covers three interrelated areas that are fundamental for management students and practitioners – namely leadership, complexity and change. The module takes a critical approach whereby students are encouraged to actively explore their thoughts, feelings, experiences and reflections on leadership theory and practice. Case studies, exercises and examples are used to provide insight into the complexities and dynamics of leadership and change in a variety of contexts.

System, Structure and Operations

This Module content enables students to deal with the tasks associated with setting up, running, and evolving the operating structures, systems, and processes of an organization so that its value adding activities can be effectively and efficiently performed and sustained. This includes information systems as well as other operating assets.

·       Choosing an appropriate organizational form to support value creation and transformation within and between organizations 

        (Example - throughout the whole global value chain). 

·       Information systems choices to support evolving organizational choices and coordination within and between organizations 

        in a global context. 

·       Sustainable operations management. Dealing with increasing organizational scale and complexity related to greater levels of 

        vertical and horizontal integrations. 

·       Building quality into the design, production and delivery of products and services and taking into consideration their impact 

        on sustainability. 

·       Choosing appropriate performance indicators and dealing with business improvement. Switching to ecommerce and building 

        an online presence and operating processes for evolving businesses. 

·       Ethically effective and sustainable global supply chain management and purchasing practice in delivering business value.

·       Facilitating customer co-creation/co-production.


Managing People in Global Context

This module includes Selection interviewing, negotiating skills, conflict resolution, staff development.

·       External and internal influences which shape the management of people including economic perspectives on labour markets 

        and institutional (legal) perspectives. 

·       Exploration of the link between HR strategy, policy and practice and organizational strategy and the contribution of human 

        resource management to organizational effectiveness. 

·       The role of line managers and the HR professional in the delivery of effective people management. 

·       The practical application and theoretical approaches to resourcing, acquiring talent, managing performance and the development 

        of people in the workplace in an international context. 

·       Contemporary developments in the field of people management. 

·       Practical skill development in aspects of managing people.

·       Foundations of Strategy and Strategy Process – including economic concepts underpinning strategy and assumptions; 

        sources of competitive advantage; evaluation of strategies

Dissertation

This module will enable students to practice and demonstrate skills and knowledge that they have acquired during their studies. The module provides the opportunity for students to further develop their evaluative and critical enquiry skills through analysis and synthesis of complex material. It also enables students to develop skills in planning and managing a substantial independent analytical investigation in a topic area of their choice. In designing and undertaking their own study students are encouraged to conduct conceptual and empirical research that advances the understanding about the role, dynamics, and impact of organizations in the creation of sustainable social, environmental and economic value.

·       Synthesize critical thinking and problem solving to an area of interest and organizational relevance.

·       Analyze information effectively to abstract meaning and make recommendations. 

·       Communicate complex ideas in a clear, organized and professionally presented method.
